Catholic Playlist Shows 190-193

Oh how time runs by. It’s been over 2(!) months since I lasted posted a new show here to the website and I feel terrible about it for a couple of reasons. First, the show is first and foremost a showcase of some of the best and newest contemporary Christian music from Catholic artists and if I don’t post a show they miss out on some key exposure to their target audience. Ouch. Second, the show serves a way for Christian music lovers to discover new music and artists to listen to for encouragement and inspiration. When there’s no show, there’s no discovery. Sigh.

We’re winding up the Advent season with this week’s show, which will be the last show for 2017. We’re going to take a break for Christmas and New Years, and then we’ll be back in 2018 with Season 5 of the Catholic Playlist sharing more of the best and newest contemporary Christian music from Catholic artists. Lots of great new music coming in 2018, but until then let’s enjoy some Advent and Christmas music, including songs from Matt Maher, Josh Blakesley, Jaime Thietten, The Vigil Project, and leading off is a soon to be released single from Aly Aleigha – “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent”

I took a few weeks off from producing shows to do something a little more important, like being ordained a permanent deacon in the diocese of Toledo:

It was truly a blessed day and one I will never forget.

The good news about not producing a new show for a few weeks is that this show is stuffed full of new music released during this time. As I mentioned last week, Matt Maher’s new album Echoes is out and it’s crazy good as you might expect. Mikey Needleman and John Finch also have new albums, and Shaun Garrison released a new single too.

Pontifex Letters from the WastelandBut my favorite new release comes from Pontifex, who’s album Letters from the Wasteland, Vol 1 is a tour de force of Catholic hip hop. Fans of this genre of music need to get this music in their ears, and if you have young people in your life give them this music. It may reach them in a way that no other kind of music can. I picked “New Day” to share in the playlist because it has the best sound for Catholic radio, a place where hip hop/rap is never heard. Enjoy!

Sharing the joy of the Gospel through the power of music – that’s what we do here on the Catholic Playlist show – a showcase of the best and very newest contemporary Christian music from Catholic artists only.

This week the music you’ll be hearing is from female artists only — it’s our first ever ‘Ladies Only’ playlist! This ought to be a lot of fun don’t you think? You know, a few years ago we might have had a bit of difficulty coming up with enough female only artists to fill the show without playing someone twice, but that’s not the case any more. In fact, we had to leave many female artists off the list, like Stefania Elsmore, Rebecca Roubion, Teresa Peterson, Sarah Kroger Quaglia, Jackie Francois Angel, Jackie Bissin, and others. I’ll have to make it up to them in a future playlist! But you will hear from Alanna Bourdreau, Sarah Hart, Marie Miller, Dana Catherine, Alverlis and so many more.

Some of the old (can anything really be called ‘old’ yet in Catholic contemporary music?) include 2 songs from Katy Blythe, one that’s very familiar in “New & Free”, and the other a surprisingly good song that deserves air time in “Curls.” Other older songs come from Aly Aleigha, Emily Wilson and Fr Kevin McGoldrick. This week’s episode of the Catholic Playlist Show continues our recent run of new artists and music making their debuts in the show. Last week was Brother Isaiah in episode #166, Daniel Rolf in episode #164, and sandwiched between was the new album release of Marie Miller in episode #165. This week it’s Rita West joining the Catholic Playlist in epsiode #167 as our new featured artist.

Rita West - ChosenIf you’ve listened to the show for a while you’ve heard her singing before. In April 2016 Rita and John Finch co-wrote and recorded “Heart of Mercy”, a single we’ve played many times over the last year and now Rita has released her own album Chosen, an EP with six original songs. We’ll debut “Victor”, the first track from EP, in the playlist.

Michael James Mette released a new full length album a couple week ago titled “Between the Lines” and you’ll hear his song “Higher” later on in the playlist. Other great songs can be heard from Brother Isaiah, Marie Miller, Matt Faley, John Finch, WAL, Dana Catherine, and others.
