St Patrick's Day Wins the Playlist

Catholic Playlist Show #189

This weekend features the feast of St Patrick on Saturday, March 17, 2018, so we thought some Irish music would be appropriate for the playlist this week. This is the only time you’ll hear this music! Scythian leads off the playlist with “Fields of St James”, followed by “Jigsaw” later on. Seasons gives us “King of the Faeries” and “Dalriada/Song of Saint Patrick”, Joe Zambon offers an “Irish Jig”, and of course playlist regular Ceili Rain is in the mix with “The King & I”.

While the Irish music dominates the first half of the playlist, you’ll enjoy selections from artists like The Mosleys, Audrey Assad, Ricky Vazquez and The Vigil Project.

We’re winding up the Advent season with this week’s show, which will be the last show for 2017. We’re going to take a break for Christmas and New Years, and then we’ll be back in 2018 with Season 5 of the Catholic Playlist sharing more of the best and newest contemporary Christian music from Catholic artists. Lots of great new music coming in 2018, but until then let’s enjoy some Advent and Christmas music, including songs from Matt Maher, Josh Blakesley, Jaime Thietten, The Vigil Project, and leading off is a soon to be released single from Aly Aleigha – “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent”

Last week’s show was a bonanza of just released or never played before music on the show. We would’ve had almost all new music last week if we hadn’t forgot a couple tracks in the selection process. Therefore my oversight leads to 3 new selections in this week’s episode, including a beautiful ballad by Rebecca Roubion from back in 2014.

Alob No Match For LoveThe brand new music comes from Cody Roth with a single called Jesus I Trust in You, and Alob releases a full length album titled No Match for Love and you’ll hear the title track lead off the last segment of the show. Sharing the joy of the Gospel through the power of music – that’s what we do here on the Catholic Playlist show – a showcase of the best and very newest contemporary Christian music from Catholic artists only.

This week the music you’ll be hearing is from female artists only — it’s our first ever ‘Ladies Only’ playlist! This ought to be a lot of fun don’t you think? You know, a few years ago we might have had a bit of difficulty coming up with enough female only artists to fill the show without playing someone twice, but that’s not the case any more. In fact, we had to leave many female artists off the list, like Stefania Elsmore, Rebecca Roubion, Teresa Peterson, Sarah Kroger Quaglia, Jackie Francois Angel, Jackie Bissin, and others. It figures. I play up a special episode featuring all ‘super upbeat’ songs, which proved really popular, and then I don’t post a new show for nearly 2 months. From upbeat to silence for weeks…how ironic.

New shows have been produced nearly every week since the upbeat show, and I’ll post some explanation as to why the posts have been delayed soon, but until then enjoy this catch up post featuring 4 shows:

After releasing an “upbeat” theme show featuring all high energy songs, this week we take things a little slower, but only a little. Some of the music in the playlist includes “Coming Home” by Joe Zambon, “Even The Winter” by Audrey Assad, “Even In This” from Josh Blakesley and “Innocent” by Francis Cabildo. Other artists you’ll hear include Out of Darkness, Alob, Kara Klein, Tori Harris, Dave Moore and others.

The process of selecting music for each playlist sometimes leads us to find songs on albums that we didn’t notice before. That’s the case this week as we realized that “Curls” from Katy Blythe’s debut EP ‘NEW’ was a really good song. Same goes for “All I Am Is Yours” by Benjamin Jude and “Lead Me To You” by John Trabbic. Lent is underway in 2017 and while we won’t be playing songs with alleluia in the title or in the lyrics (but we might miss one here or there — please forgive!), we will keep playing the best and newest contemporary Christian music by Catholic artists. One of great things about a show like the Catholic Playlist is that it features a diverse variety of music genres, from pop to rock to folk to country to even a little hip hop. A distinctly country sound can be found in the second segment of this week’s Catholic Playlist Show. As we shared in the previous post, we’re crunched for time when we reach Advent and the end of the calendar year. There is so much to do and try to wrap up in time to relax once Christmas arrives. One of the things moved down the priority list are the web postings for the latest Catholic Playlist shows. We know we’re not treating you well, our faithful listeners, as you get to miss out on some of the latest music specially written and composed for this season of preparation. One of our resolutions for the next season is to be better next year.

Instead of posting each show individually, we’re packaging them up here in one place to make is easy to find and listen to these special shows. All 4 Advent and Christmas episodes of the Catholic Playlist are right here to enjoy. In addition to the many ‘classics’ from your favorite artists we’re pleased to share some of the latest music!

Vigil Project Series 2The first major release is Series #2: Advent + Christmas by the Vigil Project. The new album features seven new songs (and accompanying videos) that invite you to “Keep Watch and Pray” for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. You can hear the first 2 songs they released in playlist #149. Greg&Lizzy are featured in “Prepare Him Room” and John Finch leads us in “Savior of The World”, an upbeat song about the coming of the Messiah. Then in playlist #150, Andrea Thomas leads off the show with “In Need of a Savior”, and John Finch brings us “Silent Night” in playlist #151.

Jaime Thietten Joy of ChristmasNext is Jaime Thietten and her new Christmas album titled The Joy of Christmas. This collection of 17 songs has everything you want in a Christmas season album, and we got the album just in time to play 3 songs in playlist #151. Featuring a full orchestra, the sound is warm, rich and inviting and parallels any release you’d find from the major record labels. You won’t want to miss her duet with Vince Gill in “The First Noel / Angels We Have Heard on High” at the 26:30 mark!

Abigail Winzer RejoiceAbigail Winzer is a young new artist who released her first album titled Rejoice back in October. The album includes seven classic Advent and Christmas songs, and we found listening to it to be peaceful and relaxing. The distinct sound heard throughout the album is thanks to a unique instrument called the duduk, which creates a rich, haunting sound appropriate as we wait in the dark for the coming of the light of the world. Don’t miss her performance of “O Come O Come Emmanuel” in playlist #149!

Oh, and don’t forget that Matt Maher released a new Christmas single too – Glory (Let There Be Peace)!
