We worked in some more recent arrangements of sacred songs in the playlist for you this week in Catholic Playlist Worship #69. S2:E25 Catholic Playlist Worship #68

To commemorate the recent canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, we lead off with two tracks that relate to her life. First, it’s “Prayer of St Francis” from the soundtrack of the movie The Letters, based on her life, followed by “I Thirst” from Annie Karto. Mother Teresa said that those words, “I thirst”, written in their chapel and taken from Jesus’s words from the cross on Good Friday, were a constant reminder of the purpose of the Missionaries of Charity. Other performers appearing in this episode include Kitty Cleveland, Jack Cassidy, Audrey Assad, Lorraine Hess, Collin Raye and several more.

Two classics from the St Louis Jesuits hightlight this edition of Catholic Playlist Worship. The music of the St Louis Jesuits – Bob Dufford, S.J., John Foley, S.J. and Dan Schutte – continue to permeate the liturgical music books for the last 40+ years, and “Earthen Vessels” and “Turn to Me” are well known. So are selections like “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace”, performed by Friar Alessandro and “On Eagle’s Wings” sung by Melinda Kirigin-Voss. S2:E20 Catholic Playlist Worship #63

New artists and music is what the Catholic Playlist is all about. This hasn’t always been true however for the Catholic Playlist Worship version of the show. After 62 episodes of the show, we don’t see the same kind of energy being put into traditional, sacred and classical music. Maybe we aren’t trying as hard, but it seems true to us. That’s probably why the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist and the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of the Apostles from the De Montfort Music label took the classical music world by storm the last couple of years.

This week we find a new artist to share with you from the sacred music side. Lorraine Hess joins the Worship show this week with “Soul of Christ”, a new arrangement of the Anima Christi prayer. Jack Cassidy smoothly sings “Brian’s Hymn (When I Turn to You)” and the sisters of the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of the Apostles beautifully offer “Lauda Sion”. Other performers include Collin Raye, Liz Christian, Kitty Cleveland, Steve Angrisano and more.
