#87 Catholic Playlist Show

Catholic Playlist #87The Catholic Playlist show is a showcase of some of the best and very newest music released today by Catholic artists. We have a new featured artist this week – Hope and Justin – and we have cool mix of new and previously unplayed music in the playlist, with songs from Katy Blythe, PJ Anderson, Dante Schmitz, Connor Flanagan, Alverlis, Greg & Lizzy and Of The Tower. We have two songs from Josh Blakesley Band in the playlist too, including the first song “Revive Us” from their latest album “Even In This”.

Hope and JustinOur featured new artist this week is Hope & Justin. Hope and Justin have been playing music together since the first night they met, which was over 10 years ago now, but they are still at it and are joined by what they say are “incredibly talented friends”. They describe their music as homegrown music with lots of soul: everything you loved about 70’s folk and bluegrass with a modern vibe. In 2013 they released their second album titled “Eastern Bound”, and they’ve been rewarded for their hard work and talent, having been selected as “New Folk Finalists” in the Texas Kerrville Folk Festival, semi-finalists in the International Songwriting Competition (chosen among 20,000 contestants), and awarded “Best Folk Song” in the West Coast Songwriter’s Competition. Hope & Justin are making their Catholic Playlist debut with “St Michael’s VW” from their latest album “Eastern Bound”.

And making a return to our blog posts here for each show, here are links in iTunes of all the songs in this week’s playlist.

#84 Catholic Playlist Show

Catholic Playlist #84The discovery and sharing of new music is both rewarding and fun. Who doesn’t like to tell their friends to listen to something that we like and are pretty sure they are going to like too? The fact that we get to discover and share new music with you through this show is nothing short of amazing.

So it’s with great anticipation that in this week’s show we’re debuting a brand new song from Fr Pontifex and his new album ‘The Invincibles’. The playlist also has music from Dee Simone, Audrey Assad, Ike Ndolo, Matt Faley, Kara Klein, Sarah Hart and a host of other great artists, including Dave Moore who gets the show started with “Swept Away”.

The second segment of the show is where you’ll find Fr Pontifex’s new song. Many of you may be asking – Who is “Fr Pontifex”? Well, Fr Pontifex is a priest in the diocese of Evansville, Indiana and he’s quite a talented Catholic hip hop artist who has now recorded 3 full length albums. You might be wondering why we’d play hip hop or ‘rap’ music on the Catholic Playlist, even if it is from a Catholic priest. The answer is that first this music is quite good, but second that this show is about discovering new music that carries the Catholic message – a message in a genre that’s attractive to our youth right now, and you need to know about it to be able to share it with others who might really enjoy it.

Pontifex-InvinciblesThe song we’ll be debuting is called “Ocean” and it’s the lead the single off of his new album “The Invincibles”. The song is about being called by God to the great adventure. One of the lines in the song – “Safer in your waters than these shores is what you promise” – encapsulates the meaning of this piece. God may call us to the deep waters, to the unknown and to place that is not comfortable but with that he promises his presence and grace. He walks with us and directs our steps.

Who are you going to discover and hear for the first time in this hour?

#80 Catholic Playlist Show

Catholic Playlist #80We’ve got new music this week from Matt Maher, Dave Moore and Cody Roth, plus Dante Schmitz is our new featured artist this week on the Catholic Playlist show.

Welcome to the Catholic Playlist where we share the joy of the Gospel by playing the best and some of the very newest contemporary Christian music from Catholic artists. We’re so pleased to be able to share this new playlist of songs with you this week which includes a new selection from Matt Maher’s new album ‘Saints and Sinners’, a new song from Dee Simone’s debut EP ‘Lovesick’, and our new artist Dante Schmitz; plus songs from performers like Andrea Thomas, Shaun Garrison, Josh Blakesley Band, Dave Moore and Greg&Lizzy.

Dante SchmitzAs for our featured new artist this week, Dante began his music ministry in middle school and high school, when he attended Saint Joseph’s parish in Norman and sang in a band that headlined youth rallies and retreats around the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. Dante attributes his talent and love of music as a clear sign that this is what God wants him to do. In fact, performing Christian music has become more than just a form of spiritual expression for Dante; it has become a way of sharing and growing spiritually with people from all walks of life. Something he consistently hears from listeners after performing is, “I don’t like Christian music, but I really enjoy what you’re doing.” For Dante this is the greatest affirmation of success. And with God’s grace, his music will continue to be a light for those in darkness and bridge the gap between spiritual and secular listeners. For his Catholic Playlist debut we play the title track from his latest album ‘Brighter Than The Sun.”

Finally, here is the iTunes playlist of all the songs in show #80:

#77 Catholic Playlist Show

Catholic Playlist #77New albums from Matt Maher, Chris Bray and WAL (formerly Jacob & Matthew Band) headline episode #77 of the Catholic Playlist show this week.

mm-saintsMatt Maher released his new album titled ‘Saints and Sinners’ on March 17th and it does not disappoint. In fact, it’s hard to pick one or two favorites from the album because the music is so good. We got our hands on the deluxe edition which has a 18 tracks, for over an hour of music goodness and inspiration. We start the playlist with his first radio single ‘Because He Live (Amen)’, and then later in the playlist we picked ‘Everything Is Grace’ for an encore. We think you’ll like it.

chris-bray2On the same day Chris Bray dropped his new album called ‘The Praises of His People Live’. Chris’s latest work reflects his desire to “create a project that enables people to be able to enter into worship with God. The goal of this record was to create an experience that Christ followers could worship along with in their car on their way to work or throughout their day and feel like they are part of a larger church, together worshipping our Creator.” So he assembled a group of worshippers together and captured an evening of praise singing their favorite worship songs: songs like ‘10,000 Reasons’, ‘Our God’, ‘Lord I Need You’, ‘Your Love Never Fails’, ‘Oceans’ and more, including the one in the playlist, ‘Great Are You Lord’.

WALNot only did Jacob & Matthew Band release a new EP on Marth 12th, but they also announced a name change to WAL. According to their new website walmusic.com, after 12 years being known as Jacob and Matthew Band, they have decided through prayer and discernment to rename themselves to WAL. In going this new direction, they said that “God sees all of us, wonderfully made, and wants us to know that we are loved. This love is what propels us to share His love with other people, through music.” The new EP is titled ‘Always and Everywhere’, and in the playlist is the title track, ‘Always & Everywhere’.

#76 Catholic Playlist Show

Catholic Playlist #76Catholic Playlist show #76 comes to you near the midpoint of Lent 2015 and let it be a little bit of encouragement and sunshine during this penitential season.

Now that we’ve been doing this show for nearly 2 years, we have built up a nice sized library of music that keeps expanding every week as new artists come along (Matt Faley, Teresa Peterson, Shaun Garrison, Dave Moore) and new albums are released (Greg & Lizzy, Mikey Needleman, and Matt Maher on 3/17). So we packed the playlist tight this week chock full of great music and a couple of new songs. Included in Playlist #76 are Alverlis, Katy Blythe, Tori Harris, Ike Ndolo, Greg & Lizzy, Matt Faley, Josh Blakesley and others. And be sure to check out the first track from Kevin Heider called St Brigid’s Fire. Even though it’s written about St Brigid, it makes for a great Irish drinking song fit of St Patrick’s day. Enjoy!
